March 2023 International SAT Digital Exam
In March 2023, the College Board launches its first fully digital SAT for international students. This blog is tailored for students preparing for that new version. At Presidio Education®, we train students using full-length diagnostic tests (DTs), time management drills, and strategy coaching for the digital format.
Overview of the Digital SAT
While the digital SAT still tests reading, writing, and math fundamentals, the structure and delivery have changed significantly. The entire test is now administered on a computer using the Bluebook™ app, and the exam is adaptive — meaning that performance on the first module of each section determines the difficulty level of the second.
The test is divided into two major sections:
Reading and Writing
Math
Each section contains two modules, for a total of four modules.
Digital SAT Timing Breakdown
The total testing time is approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes, not including breaks, making the digital SAT noticeably shorter than the previous paper version, which lasted closer to 3 hours.
Between the two sections, students receive a 10-minute break. There are no breaks between modules within the same section.
The following table details the tentative SAT exam updates from College Board. Created by Presidio Education®, 2023.

Reading and Writing Section
This section replaces the long reading passages of the previous SAT with short, standalone texts — each followed by one multiple-choice question. These shorter paragraphs allow students to focus better, retain more, and work faster.
Students are tested on:
Grammar and punctuation
Logical sentence transitions
Vocabulary in context
Evidence-based reading
Interpreting charts and tables
The question difficulty can vary, and the second module adapts based on the student's performance in the first. It’s important to be precise and focused from the very beginning.
Math Section
Students are allowed to use a calculator on all math questions, a major change from the previous SAT format. The Bluebook™ app includes an on-screen graphing calculator, but we recommend using a physical calculator to move more efficiently.
Topics include:
Linear equations and systems
Ratios and percentages
Functions and graphs
Geometry and trigonometry
Real-world word problems
Importantly, all math questions are multiple choice. There are neither “grid-in” nor free-response math questions on the digital SAT.
What Does Adaptive Testing Mean?
Each section is split into two modules. The first module of each section contains a mix of easy, medium, and difficult questions. Based on your performance, the second module will adjust — delivering questions that are more or less challenging. Scoring takes both accuracy and difficulty level into account.
Because of this, it’s especially important to perform well on Module 1 to maximize your score potential.
Time Management and Practice Tips
Use full-length digital practice tests to get used to Bluebook™ and pacing.
Avoid spending too much time on any one question — every question is worth the same amount.
Skip and return when needed. Mark tricky questions and go back if time allows.
Read questions carefully, especially on the Reading and Writing section where wording can be subtle.
Familiarize yourself with your calculator to reduce time spent typing in basic operations.
At Presidio Education®, our SAT training programs include digital mock exams, module pacing drills, and detailed feedback to improve speed and accuracy under pressure.

Stay Focused, Stay Ready
The digital SAT is shorter, more focused, and arguably more efficient than its predecessor — but it comes with new demands. Success will depend on your ability to adapt to the digital interface, master time management, and develop strong reading, writing, and math fundamentals.
