The New SAT Format

The SAT has officially entered a new era. Originally redesigned in March 2023 and launched in March 2024, the digital SAT now features a streamlined format, improved clarity, and student-friendly changes. But success still depends on how well students prepare.

At Presidio Education®, we help students build confidence through updated strategies that align with the new SAT structure.

Overview: How the New SAT Is Organized

The digital SAT is divided into two main sections:

  • Section 1: Reading and Writing

  • Section 2: Math

Each section is broken into two modules, making up four segments in total. Though both Reading and Writing modules share the same name—and the same goes for Math—the structure is easy to follow once students understand how each part works.

Reading and Writing (Modules 1 and 2)

Each Reading and Writing module is 32 minutes long and includes 27 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

What's different:

  • Short, standalone reading passages instead of long texts

  • Vocabulary-in-context questions that require choosing the best word

  • Higher-level grammar and logic analysis

Students will need to:

  • Analyze short paragraphs for tone, purpose, and argument

  • Catch grammatical errors involving punctuation, transitions, and verb tense

  • Interpret supplemental materials like graphs or tables alongside text

This modular setup allows students to stay focused. Since each question stands on its own, confusion in one question won’t affect others.

Math (Modules 1 and 2)

Each Math module is 35 minutes long and includes 22 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Key advantages of the new format include:

  • No written answer math questions—only multiple choice

  • Calculators are allowed on all questions

  • built-in reference sheet with formulas is provided at the start

Topics include:

  • Percentages

  • Algebraic equations

  • Functions and graphs

  • Geometry

Students should get familiar with calculator functions and practice solving problems accurately under time pressure. This structure reduces test-day stress and increases scoring potential for well-prepared students.

Why This New Format Is Better

The digital SAT was designed to feel more intuitive and accessible. Benefits include:

  • Shorter reading passages that are easier to digest

  • Individual, self-contained questions that build confidence

  • No open-ended math problems

  • Clear and consistent section timing

In short, the digital SAT rewards preparation without overwhelming students.
